Faking Christmas

My favourite Christmas movie has inspired a book. Can this possibly be a good thing? One would guess not, if one knew me at all, but one might be wrong.

Title: Faking Christmas

Author: Kerry Winfrey

Vibe: Christmas in Connecticut but make it the present day, and give the heroine a super-competent twin sister who owns a farm, and also the hero should be almost-Mr.-Darcy.

Thoughts: This was witty and romantic and light and fluffy, and I loved every minute of it. And that’s in spite of the fact that I recognized the set up from one of my favourite movies, and I’m inclined to be surly about things based on other things I already love. But no, this won me over in spite of my surliness.

Taste:

I press my lips together. “I wouldn’t say I have no cooking knowledge. I once worked the funnel cake stand at a Renaissance fair.”

Max doesn’t say anything.

“My boyfriend at the time was a knife thrower and he got me the job,” I say haughtily. “And, yes, I was let go when I started a grease fire, but that wasn’t my fault and I don’t wish to discuss it further.”

“So you don’t know how to cook anything at all?” he clarifies.

“I know how to order food, which I feel is an important skill.” (p. 64)

Verdict: This is definitely the escapism I needed (possibly we all need?), retaining all the cherished bits of Christmas wrapped in hilarity and mishap and a whole lot of forgiveness and understanding.
